Principal Standby · Philip Company
From Houston
to Hamilton.
John Devereaux grew up in Houston, Texas and discovered performance at 14 — not by choice, but because a friend needed a replacement. He stepped on stage and everything changed.
He earned his BFA in Theatre from Texas Christian University, relocated to Los Angeles, and spent years in regional theater while auditioning relentlessly for Hamilton. Self-tapes. Open calls in New York. Work sessions with the associate director. Every type of audition — three years' worth — before Hamilton finally said yes.
Since 2019, he's been a cornerstone of the national tour, covering six roles — including George Washington, King George III, and Lafayette/Jefferson — often with no notice at all.
"I just felt like everything I've done was leading up to this point. It'll go down in history as one of my top moments in my career."— John Devereaux, on performing as George Washington
on opening night at Bass Hall, Fort Worth
His former professor at TCU put it best: "One of the things I've always admired about John's acting is that it seems effortless. There wasn't a performative air about him, but rather one of great reality and truth."
International productions. A world premiere role. 54 Below in New York City. John Devereaux is not waiting in the wings. He is the show.

It seems effortless. He doesn't seem to be acting. There wasn't a performative air about him, but rather one of great reality and truth.
The term hometown hero is an understatement. John Devereaux is excited to be back home and around family as he tours with Hamilton.
On almost any given night, John Devereaux could be a king. A couple of days later, he could be the first president of the United States.
